References

Die References gehören zu den standardisierten Headern von Usenet Artikeln. Sie umfassen eine Liste der Message-IDs der im selben Thread vorangegangenen Postings und ermöglichen damit erst das Threading.

Da auch dieser Header dem Limit von 998 Zeichen unterliegt, muss er in längeren Threads gekürzt werden.

Ab hier gelten nun unterschiedliche Meinungen.

• RFC 1036 sagt aus, dass:
  • Eine 'vernünftige' Anzahl Message-IDs stehen bleiben sollte
    It is permissible to not include the entire previous "References" line if it is too long. An attempt should be made to include a reasonable number of backwards references.
• In Son-of-RFC 1036 wird spezifiziert, dass:
  • Die Message-ID des Ursprungsposting stehen bleiben muß
  • Mindestens die letzten 3 Message-IDs stehen bleiben müssen
  • Jede Message-ID eines Subjectwechsels erhalten bleiben sollte, wenn der Newsreader diese feststellen kann
  • Jede im Posting referenzierte Message-ID enthalten sein muß
    Followup agents SHOULD not shorten References headers. If it is absolutely necessary to shorten the header, as a desperate last resort, a followup agent MAY do this by deleting some of the message IDs. However, it MUST not delete the first message ID, the last three message IDs (including that of the immediate precursor), or any message ID mentioned in the body of the followup. If it is possible for the followup agent to determine the Subject content of the articles identified in the References header, it MUST not delete the message ID of any article where the Subject content changed (other than by prepending of a back reference).
• Der Grandson-of-RFC 1036 nun schreibt davon, dass:
  • Frühestens nach 31 Message-IDs gekürzt werden darf
  • Die ersten 5 und mindestens die letzten 9 Message-IDs stehen bleiben müssen
  • Es sollten alle im Posting referenzierten Message-IDs erhalten bleiben
    Followup Agents SHOULD NOT trim message ids out of the References content unless the number of message ids exceeds 31 in which case message ids SHOULD be trimmed until there are only 31.
    Trimming SHOULD be done by removing the sixth (6th) message-id and any incomplete or otherwise broken message-ids. If Followup Agents trim any message-ids out of the References content, then they MUST leave the first five and the last nine message ids and they SHOULD also leave any message ids mentioned in the body of the article intact.

Es lässt sich also keine pauschale Aussage darüber treffen, wie die References gekürzt werden dürfen, da son-of und grandson-of nicht überall anerkannt sind und nirgends erläutert wird, welche Anzahl "vernünftig" ist.
